How to Use the Speech Timer

To use the speech timer, click the "Speech Timer" link below (but you may want to read the rest of this page first, to learn more about the Timer):

Speech Timer

Why use a timer?

The Speech Timer is very helpful when practicing a speech. It looks and works similar to the timer that our club uses to officially time speeches, so you can practice at home, at the office or anywhere you have a connection to the Web.

How does it work?

How do I use the indicator lights?

This Speech Timer can time a 2 minute speech, a 5-7 minute speech or an 8-10 minute speech. It has a GREEN indicator light, a YELLOW indicator light, and a RED indicator light. The timer lights are programmed to come on at specific intervals during a speech so that the speaker has an indication of the time remaining.

The following chart indicates when the lights turn on for a 2 minute, 5-7 minute and 8-10 minute speech:

Speech Duration Green Light Yellow Light Red Light Flashing Lights
2 minutes 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30
5-7 minutes 5:00 6:00 7:00 7:30
8-10 minutes 8:00 9:00 10:00 10:30

When the RED light comes on, you know that you have 30 seconds to wrap up your speech and release the lectern properly. When the lights begin flashing, YOUR TIME IS UP!!!

The elapsed time indicator will display the time up to 12 minutes.

Notes:

Be sure your screen saver interval is greater than the length of your speech or you may find yourself continually refreshing your screen!!

The program runs inside the browser, so once your browser has loaded the Speech Timer, you do not have to remain connected to the Internet to run the Speech Timer. This is very convenient if you have a laptop, since you can move the laptop to a location conducive to practicing your speech after loading the timer into your browser window.

For any of you who are ambitious, you can even run a second Speech Timer in a different browser window, ...just in case you want to practice more than one speech at a time! :-)
